Joseph Bramah was the one who patented the first practical water closet in 1778. A water closet has a sink and a flush toilet in the room. It is an old fashioned bathroom named the water closet. The water closet is also known as W.C. This is a British term.

The Uncommon Luxury

When Sir John Harrington first invented the magical flushing toilet with a cistern, it was considered to be an uncommon luxury for many. This grand invention did not catch on right away.

The original toilet would have been rather extravagant for many ordinary individuals. The flushing toilet became more common in the 20th century. The flushing toilet actually replaced the earth closet.

What is an Earth Closet?

The earth closet was a box. It had granulated clay that was over a pan. The modern toilet has a much more appealing look and feel as opposed to the earth closet. It was Henry Moule who had patented the earth closet toilet.

This system was patented in 1860. This was considered to be a sanitary and simple set-up. This would have been used in homes, years, ago, where there was not any indoor piped water available.
